'Sherlock' actor Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange – finally a medical superhero!

It's official. Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play Dr Stephen Vincent Strange in the Marvel Universe! For reasons best known to them, docs seldom choose to become superheroes. Most superheroes are from the media (Superman, Spiderman), scientists (The Hulk, Iron Man), socialites (The Batman) or students (X-Men). Doctor Strange is one of the few medical doctors who chose to go down the superhero route!

Doctor Strange will hit the theatres on November 4, 2016 and will be directed by Scott Derrickson and the screenplay will be written by Scott Derrickson. 'Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,' said Producer Kevin Feige. 'In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.'

Cumberbatch is known for his esoteric roles and we are sure he will do justice to the part. His roles include Khan Noonien Singh (Star Trek), Sherlock (BBC's Sherlock), Julian Assange, Stephen Hawking and Alan Turing (The Imitation Games).

Who is Doctor Strange?

One of the stranger comic book characters Dr Stephen Vincent Strange is a magician who used to be a neurosurgeon but damages his hands in an accident. This ruins his ability to conduct surgeries. His massive ego prevents him from taking a teaching a job and he travels the world to search for a cure for his trembling hands. However, various doctors and specialists fail to cure his problem including a homeopath.

Refusing to give up, he travels to the Himalayas for a cure where he meets a hermit called The Ancient One. The hermit refuses to help Dr Strange because of his egoistical ways but Strange shows his good side to the hermit who teaches him mystic arts. Strange returns to New York and becomes the Sorcerer Supreme of the world and protects it from all magic threats.
