The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence especially when it comes to Indians and skin colour. While foreigners are all about sunbathing to get the oh-so-perfect tan, we Indians are shying away from our natural brown tone. We stay away from the sun, try all kinds of natural remedies to become fair and if all else fails, run to buy a fairness cream. Read: Do fairness products really work? While we fuss over fair skin, the people who are cashing in on it are the companies manufacturing these creams. And even though we know that these creams neither make us fair or lovely, we still use them with the hope of a lighter skin tone. Anything and everything from rishtas to jobs are based on skin colours — at least that’s what the ads tell. While the youth of the country is becoming oblivious to such superficial issues, we still have a long way to go before the obsession with being fair is a thing of the past. Even Bollywood celebs have been vocal about such issues. A few years back, actress Kangana Ranaut refused to endorse a fairness cream and was hugely applauded for it. The latest celebrity to speak up against fairness creams is director, Shekhar Kapur. A newspaper recently quoted him saying, ‘Cosmetic companies are trying to turn India into a nation of Albinos. No dark area on any part of the body. Except maybe our hearts. Got a cream for that?’ He later tweeted this:

And it is not just celebrities with a lighter skin who are talking about it, actresses like Lara Dutta and Bipasha Basu have let their actions speak louder. These ladies have embraced their dusky complexion which proves that it is not the shade of your skin that determines how beautiful you are.
