Bird flu scare in Chandigarh continues after a sample of geese tested positive with H5N1 virus near the Sukhna lake. The perimeter of the lake was fenced to close tourist entrance near the water body as a precautionary measure. About 66 cops have been deployed around the lake perimeter.
For the safety of culling workers and those near the lake around the clock, the UT police have requested the sub-divisional magistrate (central) for provision of the drug TamiFlu. Reportedly, it was confirmed that the medicine would be provided to the cops on Monday. Although none of the workers or cops have been suffering from flu like symptoms, some of the cops complained of headache due to extreme cold weather. However, as a precautionary measure, they'll be tested for H5N1 on Monday at testing facility at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PGIMER). On the other hand, administrators will be continuing sampling of birds by door-to-door survey at poultry farms around and nearby the lake.
