Scorching Heatwave Prompts New Set Of Guidelines For Delhi Schools: Full List Inside
Temperatures in North India are soaring as residents of Delhi braces for impact in the coming months. According to reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in Delhi will rise even further in the coming few days. The weather department informed that there will be a two to three degrees Celsius rise in the states Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana and Bihar. Amidst this announcement, schools in Delhi have also received a fresh set of guidelines to protect students from heatwave. Building upon earlier advisories, the Directorate of Education (DoE) recently issued directives on school preparedness for measures regarding rising temperatures.

Schools have been instructed to avoid conducting student assemblies during the afternoon hours in order to minimise heat exposure.
The DoE has directed the schools to not conduct classes in open-air environments. This is to ensure that students are not exposed to harsh weather and intense heat during school hours.
All outdoor activities have been banned until the weather conditions improve.
Schools have been advised to emphasise the importance of hydration. As per the directive, "an adequate supply of drinking water must be readily accessible to students at all times. RO systems and water coolers must be maintained in proper working order."
Schools are to schedule water breaks as part of the class routine to encourage students to stay hydrated and drink water throughout the day.
All classrooms are to be properly ventilated and equipped with functional fans in order to maintain a cooler indoors atmosphere.
"Functional extinguishers are to be installed in all corridors, adhering to fire department specifications," as per the directive.
Schools are to reinforce the need for fire safety compliance.
The circular advises schools to sensitise students on the importance of covering their heads to avoid direct sun exposure especially while commuting from school to home and vice versa.
No student, staff member or parent shall stay in open or sun-exposed areas and under direct sunlight.
Schools are to give utmost priority to health preparedness. According to the directive, "Any instance of heat-related illness must be addressed promptly. First Aid kits should include ORS doe students exhibiting symptoms. All cases of heat-related illness must be reported to the nearest health facility or hospital."
The Directorate also repeated that "all other existing safety measures and hygienic conditions must be consistently maintained in all schools."
According to reports, deputy directors of education both at the district and zone levels have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance across all schools in the capital.
