How was the study conducted?
The study was conducted over a period of five years. 1600 pupils from the age group of 11-13 were made to answer questionnaires once in 2oo9 and then again in 2014.
Conclusion:
On analysis of the data, it was found that there was a 7% spike in the number of girls that reported emotional issues while the boy's answers remained fairly stable. They also concluded that social, peer and behavioural problems remained relatively constant for boys and girls across the five years.
Reason for this spike:
According to the scientists, girls nowadays want to achieve unrealistic body images. This need is accelerated by social media and increasing sexualisation of young women. They also believed that cuts on expenditure on mental health services could also be a reason.
Solution:
The researchers suggested that appropriate resources should be easily available to teachers so that they can effectively point out any signs of emotional distress among students. They also suggested that mental health services should available widely and easily. (Read: Psychological abuse more harmful than sexual abuse for kids)
