Two days after killing a fellow patient and injuring two others, the 42-year-old HIV positive patient, who is suffering from TB of the brain, talked about the incident with the doctors treating him at JJ Hospital. 'We have started his anti-psychotic medicines and he is psychologically stable. Today, when we met him, he started talking about Monday's incident. He said that he felt as if someone was attacking him and he started hitting people in response,' said a doctor from the psychiatry department of JJ Hospital.
In an unprovoked attack around 6.30am on Monday, the patient who was admitted in Bombay Hospital's general ward, started hitting Lilabihari Govardhan Thakur, 65, who was sleeping on the adjacent bed, with a saline rod till he started bleeding. Thakur later succumbed to his injuries. He also injured two other patients Praful Parmar, 70, and Janardhan Arte, 66, and a ward boy. The doctor added that the hallucination of someone attacking is a common symptom of schizophrenia and the patient is a known case of the ailment. He had stopped his medicines a few months back. According to his wife, he showed signs of schizophrenia like irritability, muttering to himself, getting excited, not sleeping, hallucination etc. in the past few days. She claims that she had pointed this out to the treating doctors at Bombay Hospital but no one paid attention to her. (Read: Mental health issues can up HIV risk)
JJ Hospital is presently waiting for the results of a battery of tests done on the accused at Bombay Hospital. Apart from a psychiatrist, a neurologist is also examining the patient at JJ Hospital where he is been confined in an isolated room guarded by policemen. Dr TP Lahane, dean of Sir JJ group of hospitals, said: 'The patient is stable. We will do his MRI and other tests after three days.' (Read: Reading and sleep key to a healthy mind!)
