Number 9: Dengue fever just won’t go away

There was a marked increase in the number of dengue cases throughout the country with Mumbai and New Delhi accounting for a very high number of cases. As usual, our politicians had a host of reasons for it, ranging from an extended monsoon season to the Opposition which was to blame for the ailment. Number 8: Rare medical surgeries

It’s good to know that our news list isn’t dominated by celebrities or sex. Two of the more popular news items of the month involved two separate miracle medical surgeries. One involved a boy from Tamil Nadu who suffered from a rare congenital heart condition a ventricular septal defect and an overriding aorta which pretty much prevented him from leading a normal life. Thankfully, doctors were able to operate on him and what was even more amazing was the fact that it was covered under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s fund which allowed him to undergo the surgery for free! In a similarly precarious case, doctors in Mangalore performed an open heart surgery on a woman with a rare blood group the Bombay Blood group – a blood group so rare that it’s almost impossible to find a donor.

Number 7: No more clinical trials

The Supreme Court passed a ruling which said that no new clinical trials should be allowed for new drugs till a mechanism is put in place to monitor them. A bench headed by Justice R M Lodha said that a system must be put in place to protect the lives of people and asked the Centre not to allow clinical trials for untested medicines. Number 5: World Obesity Day

Being diagnosed with cancer is not the end of the road nor is the treatment methods used to fight the deadly disease. Yuvraj Singh was a living testament of the statement as he powered India to a brilliant six-wicket win over Australia in the lone Twenty20 International. The southpaw slammed an unbeaten 77 off 35 balls to help India chase down Australia’s monumental total of 201/7 with two balls to spare. Declared the Man of the Match, the southpaw slammed eight boundaries and five sixes in an innings which had a strike rate of 220. Read more about the Yuvraj Singh’s cancer comeback story.

Number 2: Akshay Kumar the real ‘BOSS’ of fitness

Bollywood’s favourite khiladi’s movie BOSS released this month and while a lot can’t be said about its plot or acting or script, one thing we did realise was that Akshay Kumar remains one of B-town’s fittest actors. Unlike his contemporaries who need expensive gyms and trainers, the former waiter instead practises martial arts and other natural exercise forms to stay in tiptop shape. Being an avid fitness enthusiast, Akshay has refrained from artificial supplements and has always maintained his body by sweating it out by playing a sport rather than lifting weights in the gym. He has created his own niche by his fitness methods that his fans truly adore and respect him for. (Read: Akshay Kumar’s fitness regime: No weights, no trainer, no diet!)

Number 1: Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement

Perhaps biggest event of the month, if not the year or even decade was India’s favourite son announcing his retirement from the game after almost two-and-a-half decades on top. Understandably, the entire nation was shocked, the notion that the Little Master will not walk out to wield his magic blade was just simply too hard to fathom!
