Kolkata, Dec 19: Sachin Tendulkar just won t stop charming people. He applauded disabled swimmer Masudur Rahman Baidya, a double amputee below the knee who conquered the English Channel by saying that athletes like him are the real heroes and their life is like an inspiration to all of us. Tendulkar was in the city for a private function and also inaugurated Rabindra Swimming Pool Anushilan Kendra at Lalkuti in Rajarhat.He inquired about Baidya's achievements and found out that he s the only man with amputed legs to cross the English Channel and strait of Gibraltar.Tendulkar was felicitated by the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality chairman Tapas Chatterjee with a gigantic garland with 34,000 roses and was given a golden crown by the chairman. He also informed that his association with the city goes along way back to 1990 and loves this place as he sees the same passion among people and has fond memories of the place. Baidya s determination and grit has to appreciated because he hasn t given up his passion for swimming after being run over by a goods train at the age of nine. This accident took away both his legs and he spent one and half years in different hospitals. The accident meant that his body below the waist would bend downwards in water, but he did not give up till he could swim. The 45 year old Baidya in an inspirational statement said that it is absolutely possible for for persons with disabilities to achieve what they want and excel at it , but one has to be dedicated to the cause.
