All it took for the Maharashtra government to begin making stricter laws against tobacco use was a life to perish due to its excessive consumption. The death of former Home Minister R R Patil due to his habit of chewing tobacco, which led to oral cancer, has instigated a sense of civic responsibility in the state health minister Dr. Deepak Sawant as he said that the government will take steps to curb tobacco use. He said that it is really sad that we lost a senior politician and statesman to acute oral cancer. (Read: Giving up the tobacco habit a cancer survivor s tale)

The Minister said that tobacco cannot be banned but they will put curbs on its consumption. He also said that until now only ads in theatres and public places create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use but there is no stringent implementation of laws and the ministry will consult the law and judiciary department on the changes that can be made to the existing laws. A 10-point plan has been designed to rid public places like train stations, colleges, government offices and all public buildings of gutkha and paan masala. The minister also said that all politicians, bureaucrats and government officials will be requested to quit chewing tobacco. While chewing of tobacco is prohibited in public spaces under section 116 of the Bombay Police Act and sections 268 and 269 of the Indian Penal Code, these strictures are seldom enforced.(Read: Union Budget 2014-15: Why higher tobacco taxes are going to save our children)
