There can be nothing more traumatic for a parent than to have their child diagnosed with a disease like cancer and Emraan Hashmi recently went through that when his son was detected with a malignant tumour in the kidneys. Ayan underwent a surgery for the tumour in Mumbai and also underwent chemotherapy in Toronto. In a recent interview with Bombay Times, the actor described his experiences, talked about chemotherapy and also how Batman and Iron Man helped out in the war on cancer.
The actor when asked about Ayan's well-being told BT: 'He is doing good and has recuperated fast. He was always doing well, even when he was diagnosed with the condition he had, in Mumbai. He was as playful as he always was and still is. He was running around in the hospital after the second day of operation.'
He also described the treatment that Ayan underwent. He explained after removing the tumour, one needs to have chemotherapy for 15 weeks. Emraan also said: 'The doctors have told us that if we would have had to pick a certain kind of cancer, it would be WILMS as the prognosis for this cancer is 90-95% making the survival rate pretty high. Children are very resilient. The word cancer for parents is the scariest thing in the world, but what they need to understand is that 95% of cancer is curable, which is what we don't get to hear as the narrative of the word cancer is so overwhelmingly full of terror. But this sane voice is not built on hope, but on scientific evidence of past prognosis.'
Emraan even described the tumour saying it looked like a pomegranate and explained how he used comic book characters to make his son feel better. What is chemotherapy?
Cancer treatment that uses drugs (anticancer drugs) to destroy cancer cells, stops them from spreading and slows their growth is called chemotherapy. Most of them are not specific to cancer cells and target all rapidly dividing cells like bone marrow cells, hair follicles, etc. Chemotherapy may be used to cure the cancer (curative), slow the growth of cancer cells to prevent the cancer from spreading, relieve symptoms of cancer (palliative) or keep the cancer from coming back (adjuvant).
