December 10, 2014, Washington: All those who have been brave enough to stick to their decision to quit smoking can now safely use e-cigarettes as it could be less addictive compared to cigarettes containing tobacco, says a new study that appeared in Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
Electronic Cigarettes what are they?
E-cigarettes or electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and flavourings through inhaled vapour, giving the smoker a feeling of smoking real cigarettes, while coping with withdrawal of smoking. The popularity of e-cigs has increased in the past 5 years, with more than 400 brands of 'e-cigs' available in the market.
Can electronic cigarettes cause nicotine addiction?
The use of E-cigarettes is still debatable, as the WHO revealed the associated risks of heart disease. However, compared to cigarettes, e-cigarettes are still less harmful because of the absence of tar and other carcinogens that are loaded in cigarettes. According to researchers e-cigs are contain lesser toxic substances. however until this study their long-term effect of nicotine dependence were unknown.
Assessing e-cigarettes dependence
This study assessed the dependence of e-cigs among 3,500 users, who were ex-smokers, through a standard online questionnaire to determine Penn State Cigarette Dependence Index and the Penn State Electronic Cigarette Dependence Index. The questionnaire lists questions on current dependence and is designed in a way that allow cross-comparison between different nicotine and tobacco products.
Results:
The study reveals that the use of advanced second-generation e-cigs efficient in delivering nicotine compared to earlier 'cigalikes,' and the high nicotine concentration in e-cig liquid predicted dependence. It was found that participants who had used e-cigs longer appeared to be more addicted.
However, Prof. Jonathan Foulds said that people with all the characteristics of a more dependent e-cig user still had a lower e-cig dependence score than their cigarette dependence score. They think this is because they're getting less nicotine from the e-cigs than they were getting from cigarettes.
Although many regular users on e- cigarettes are trying to quit smoking, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved them for this use, and they cannot be marketed as a smoking cessation product. (Read: Are e-cigarettes unhealthy?)
