A 23-year-old doctor, who was a third-year resident of KEM hospital's anaesthesia department, died due to dengue at Hinduja hospital in Mahim on Sunday. She was admitted to KEM on October 20 and was tested positive for dengue on Oct 24. She was then shifted to Hinduja Hospital on Friday after her family requested. Her platelet count had dropped to 20,000 when she was admitted. According to hospital sources, the patient was also suffering from pneumonia.

The sources also mentioned that the campus of KEM hospital is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and that about 10-15 doctors have been tested positive or suspected for dengue in the past few months. Around 50 undergraduate and postgraduate doctors got infected with the virus in the last three months.

The administration has written a letter requesting for stringent measures to prevent dengue spread in the campus.

Here are some tips to prevent dengue

  1. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known to bite humans during the day and their most common breeding grounds are man made containers. Therefore, it is advisable to not have any stagnant water around. Remember to clean out empty flower pots and not to over water potted plants. If the container that contains water cannot be emptied, remember to cover it well when not in use.
  2. Turn over empty pails and buckets, so that they do not collect excess water.
  3. Use mosquito repellants regularly. Apply it well on all exposed areas, during the day as well as at night.
  4. Make sure your window and door screens do not have any holes. If so, block those areas properly to eliminate mosquitoes.
  5. If someone at home is ill with dengue, try to not let the mosquitoes bite them or others in the house.
