Turns out that the old dating cliche about opposites who are attracted to each other like magnets is far from true. A team of scientists has found that people are usually attracted to others who share the same values and views as themselves. Co-authored by researchers at Wellesley College and the University of Kansas, the study could lead to a fundamental change in understanding relationship formation. Mainly, this study reminds us that the idea that you can change your partner or friend over time is far from the truth. Also Read - This dating app uses DNA to find your true love

In what might be considered a paradigm shift the study, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people in relationships do not change each other over time. Instead, lead authors Angela Bahns and Chris Crandall’s evidence places new emphasis on the earliest moments of a relationship, revealing that future friends or partners are already similar and have a lot in common with each other at the outset of their social connection. These are the 4 changes you experience when you are in love.

Bahns says, These findings could be seen as a cautionary message for the people, who believe they can persuade their friends or romantic partners to come around to their way of thinking, adding that change is difficult and unlikely; it’s easier to select people who are compatible with your needs and goals from the beginning.

The researchers noted that if there is some similarity between you and your partner or friend, it can lead to benefits such as stability of identity, value systems, and ideology. However, on the other hand, limited exposure to different ideas and beliefs can also be a major drawback. Read: These two things will make your relationship last longer.
