Recalling memories helpful for dementia patients!

According to a recent research study, recalling past memories by people is found to be very effective in keeping dementia at bay. George McNamara, spokesman for Alzheimer's Society said, 'Remembering things from the past by going down the memory lane acts as powerful medium of communication for people at high risk of dementia.' The lead researcher of the study said that the important fact about dementia is that it is easier for people suffering from this neurological condition to recall older memories than remembering day-to-day events. And this is very helpful as older memories have a strong and powerful impact on the emotional value, in addition to playing a key role converting those memories into positive emotions affecting the present life. Experts believe that this recognition is very useful for dementia patients as it allows them to find their way and adjust to the new surroundings in an easy manner. What is dementia? What causes it?

Dementia is a collective group of degenerative mental illnesses which is characterised by loss of cognitive function (beyond what is generally observed with normal ageing). The exact cause of dementia is still unknown but several situations can cause dementia. Degeneration of brain cells (neurons), infections that affect the brain and spine, brain abnormalities like hydrocephalus, head injuries and nutritional deficiencies are few factors that can cause dementia.
