Ratan Tata, ex-chairman of the Tata Group is set to donate equipments worth Rs 5 crore to KEM hospital's paediatric heart surgery unit. In the recent past, children who were waiting for their turn to get operated upon had died due to lack of such equipments.
The donations were made on behalf of Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust and included a heart-lung machine and an entire paediatric cardiac vascular thoracic surgery ward with an intensive care unit and 10 beds.
According to top BMC officials, this is the biggest contribution anyone has made to the city's healthcare in the recent past.
The equipments were urgently required by the hospital as doctors were unable to perform more than two surgeries a day leading to a big backlog. As many as 700 children were on the hospital's waiting list with more being added every day.
Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner of Mumbai has said that Tata Trust has set a fine example for other corporates to follow. 'We welcome the move of corporates showing interest in funding BMC projects. We will ensure that proposals for such initiatives are fast tracked.'
