After the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, Japan is currently battling a sudden surge in streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), a rare and fatal bacterial infection that can kill the infected individual within 48 hours. As per reports by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, the country has so far reported 977 cases this year.

"Most of the deaths happen within 48 hours. As soon as a patient notices swelling in the foot in the morning, it can expand to the knee by noon, and they can die within 48 hours," said Ken Kikuchi, a professor in infectious diseases at Tokyo Women's Medical University, was quoted as saying by the local media.

Similar Outbreaks In Other Countries

Other than Japan, five other nations from Europe have also reported cases of this particular bacteria to the World Health Organization (WHO). Group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease of which STSS is a part. In a statement, the WHO stated that the sudden rise in the flesh-eating bacteria has come in the backdrop after Covid restrictions were lifted.

Taking cognizance of the situation, experts have cautioned that Japan could see 2,500 cases of this deadly virus this year, accompanied by a "terrifying" mortality rate of 30%. They also urged people to ensure that they maintain hand hygiene and treat open wounds. The expert said patients can carry the invasive bacteria in their intestines which could contaminate their hands through faecal matter.

  3. Low blood pressure
