Actor Ranbir Kapoor was to celebrate his birthday on 28th of September, but even though his beau Katrina Kaif planned a surprise party for the hunky actor the celebrations had to end early. Why, you ask? Well, Ranbir Kapoor had to undergo a surgery to treat his inflamed adenoid tonsils.
When contacted by TOI, Ranbir Kapoor's father, Rishi Kapoor said that the surgery was routine, just like one normally done to repair a person's sinuses. The actor also said that Ranbir had decided to go under the knife since he had a five day break between consecutive shooting schedules and is likely to be discharged today.
According to reports the actor was suffering from difficulty breathing through his nose as he slept, which led to the inflammation of his adenoids and tonsils. The inflammation subsequently became worse and therefore they had to be removed.
What are adenoids and tonsils?
Adenoids is a small mass of tissue present at the back of your throat, at the end of your nasal passage. This mass of tissue is essential to help children beat infections and is usually present during a child's formative years. The adenoids then shrink as the child grows and is usually much smaller in adults.

Your tonsils are a mass of lymphatic tissue present at the beginning of your throat, just where your tongue enters the throat.
In some people these adenoids get enlarged and make it difficult for them to breathe through their mouth. When these adenoids get inflamed it leads to the inflammation of the tonsils too. The common symptoms of enlarged adenoids and tonsils are; having a stuffy nose, inability to breathe through your nose especially when you are lying down, snoring, sore throat, trouble swallowing food, ear ache and swollen glands in the neck that can be felt with by feeling over the area just below the jaw.
What kind of surgery did Ranbir Kapoor have to undergo?
While the early reports do not suggest the exact procedure the star had to undergo, the common options he might have had are to have either a tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy, or both. Both these surgeries are performed to remove the tonsils and adenoids and do not leave a visible scar as the structures are accessed through the mouth. Apart from this, it is most likely that the star experienced no pain during the surgery as it is done under general anesthesia.
What after the surgery?
As Ranbir recuperates from the surgery, he might experiences a few days of post-surgical discomfort like a sore throat and pain while swallowing. He will have to be on a diet of soft food and will be prescribed antibiotics to help keep infections at bay.
