Probe ordered into Goa prison food poisoning

The Goa government has ordered a magisterial probe into a food poisoning incident that claimed the life an inmate of the state's Aguada Central Jail on Friday, an official said.

'The report will be submitted to the government within 30 days,' said a government spokesperson.

Mahadev Gaonkar had died at the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim, Tiswadi, while 118 other inmates had to undergo medical treatment after they complained of food poisoning after having dinner.

'Inmate Mahadev Gaonkar died while six others are undergoing treatment at the Candolic Health Centre of the Goa Medical College and Hospital,' District Collector Mihir Vardhan said.

The hospitalised prisoners are stated to be out of danger, Vardhan said, adding that a team of medical officers was examining other inmates also of the jail.

Prison authorities have already launched an internal probe into the incident.
