Prematurely born babies need special care and attention after birth and are more prone to getting a wide range of diseases due to lack of complete development. A new study has said that preterm born babies are at higher risk of developing anxiety disorders and other mental health issues even into their late 30s. The study conducted at McMaster University in Hamilton Canada, was conducted on 84 adults who were born preterm with an average weight of two pounds and 90 adults of the same age group who were born with normal weight. The research which was published in the journal Pediatrics, says that the pre-term group was more likely to suffer from anxiety disorders, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Antenatal corticosteroids were known to have a worse effect among candidates who were exposed to them. These candidates exhibited 6 % more chances of suffering from social phobia and 10% more of ADHD.

Ryan Van Lieshout, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences explained that these risks are not as bad as they sound as out of the 84 adults in the pre-term group only 8 had ADHD . However, he also cleared that it is not certainly sure that they might suffer from these problems. (Read: Talk to premature babies to boost their health!)
