Bandra acid attack victim Preeti Rathi passed away on Saturday after battling for her life for the last one month after a man threw acid on her about a month ago. Preeti was just 23. She had come to Bombay to join the Colaba Naval Hospital INS Ashwini as a staff nurse. She was attacked as she got off her train at the Bandra terminus and the unknown assailant managed to get away.
For the last two weeks, she was on ventilator support as her right lung had suffered severe damage, hospital authorities said. She had also developed complications in the upper respiratory system. Doctors had tried their best to heal the burn injuries but the wounds continued to bleed and her kidneys also developed complications. The doctors were also contemplating grafting of artificial skin but she succumbed to her injuries.
Preeti Rathi had come to Mumbai to join duty as a nurse in the Naval Hospital when she suffered an acid attack at Bandra station. She sustained severe burns to her face, neck, chest and arms and was critical for a few days after admission. Doctors treated her for her injuries but she had lost vision in her right eye. While she subsequently regained consciousness and could communicate only with written notes, she pleaded with the doctors to help restore her vision. She underwent stem cell therapy, where cells from her left eye were used to restore vision in her right eye.
