A paper by Lancet suggests that survival rates post-surgery has improved drastically in the last half a century. According to the report, the likelihood of dying after general surgery has dropped by 90% from the 70s while the risk of dying from any cause post-surgery has decreased by 88% from an estimated 10,603 per million in the 70s to 1176 per million the 90s and 2000s. The paper scoured data from 87 studies spanning more than six decades to come to this conclusion. Although this declining pattern was evident in both developing and developed nations, the greatest and most progressive decline has been in developed countries.
More than seven million people across the globe suffer from preventable surgical injuries every year, a million of them even dying during or immediately after the surgery, a World Health Organization study had earlier said. For the first time the UN body has managed to quantify the number of surgeries taking place every year globally at 234 million.
