‘Children with Type 1 diabetes need daily dose of insulin, regular monitoring of glucose level, periodic visits to the doctors and subsequent pathology tests, which becomes a bit unaffordable for the weaker section of the society,’ said Ashok Jhingan, diabetologist and chairman, DDRC. All the children provided free insulin are between the age group of 0-18.

‘Initially we will provide free insulin to 150 children and slowly shall extend the reach to more children,’ Jinghan added.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disease which is characterised by high blood sugar levels. It can be caused either due to the lack of insulin (type 1 diabetes) or because the body’s cells fail to respond to the insulin produced (type 2 diabetes). There’s another form of diabetes that afflicts pregnant women called gestational diabetes.

Symptoms

5.     Feeling fatigued all day long

6.     Frequent infections
