Dr Satbhai explains that eye donation can give somebody the ability to experience the real beauty of life. Similarly, liver or kidney transplant can save the life of a person suffering from end-stage disease. A hand or face transplantation can significantly improve the quality of life of the recipient.
This is a story about a young individual, Mohammad Abrar, who is differently abled by polio in childhood. Unfortunately, he was also diagnosed with hepatitis B. And right yesterday, he was started on hepatitis B medicines. But despite being on this medicine, he developed liver cirrhosis, and he presented to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital with signs of advanced liver cirrhosis, that is, jaundice, ascites, bleeding, and internal bleeding.
He consulted Dr (prof) Anil Arora, Chairman of Medical Gastroenterology and Dr Arora thoroughly evaluated him and advised him to undergo a liver transplant. Until now, he has led a very active life despite being physically challenged; although he used a crutch to walk, he has been active in his social, personal, and professional life by running his shop. But because of this disease, his work was hampered, and his social life came to a standstill. He had to be in and out of the hospital multiple times, getting the water from his stomach tapped. One day, he had severe bleeding, and luckily, he was in Ganga Ram Hospital. The team and Dr Arora performed an urgent endoscopy and stopped the bleeding.
Dr Arora involved Dr Ushaht Dhir, Chairman and Director of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery, to evaluate him for a liver transplant, and he evaluated him and found some problems because of advanced cirrhosis. These problems were in his lungs and his heart because of the shunting of the blood because of long-standing cirrhosis. The treatment for this was again transplant, and the challenge was operating on a patient who was physically challenged because of polio with a contracture in the right limb; with shunting of the blood in the lung, he was unable to maintain saturation on the room here.
Dr Dhir took on this challenging patient for this very high-risk surgery, which was done meticulously. During the surgery, the challenge was his contracture in the right limb, which could not be straightened. The surgeon had to perform the surgery in a minimal space. After the surgery, he recovered slowly and very well, and he was out of the hospital on day 15. Now, he is back to work, back to life. He can fulfil his social commitments. He started running his shop and his business; that was his livelihood. He thanks the entire Sir Ganga Ram Hospital team for this.
Despite having a polio-affected leg, a determined individual successfully underwent a life-saving transplant, thanks to the immense generosity of a young donor's family. Their selfless decision to donate the organs of their loved ones ensured that many lives could be saved.
