The year 2024 witnessed multiple outbreaks of polio disease in many parts of the world starting from the war torn region of Gaza, regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Chad, Niger and other African countries like South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Somalia. According to recent news reports, the countries Spain, Germany and Poland have also suspected news concerns of a polio virus outbreak. The two countries detected polio virus in wastewater and this signals a potential resurgence of the disease.
The World Health Assembly at the United Nations Organisation had passed a resolution to eradicate polio in 1988. After this campaign was taken up by the whole world, polio cases dropped by over 99 per cent. Only few regions still remained endemic to the disease. Widespread vaccination campaign were taken up by World organisations and countries to permanently eradicate polio. However, the year 2024 did not just witness the resurgence of polio virus and new virus types but also registered the first case of polio in a 10-month-old baby in war torn Gaza.
Although cases have significantly decreased, recent wastewater monitoring in Europe, especially in Germany, Spain, and Poland, has detected traces of the poliovirus. While this finding does not confirm an outbreak, it serves as a concerning reminder of the ongoing risks.
