Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that is common in tropical and subtropical regions than in temperate climates, resulting in severe headache, joint pain, high fever, and rashes.
According to reports, dengue cases in the capital city of Bihar are on a spike currently, bringing the total number of positive cases to 1228, out of which 15 new patients were reported in the last 24 hours. Interestingly, data released by the government show that about 439 patients who tested positive for dengue belonged to an age group of 21 to 30 years.
The findings further revealed that between the period of January to June, only 53 cases were reported, while the number rose to 24 in July alone. The mosquito-borne disease rapidly increased in August, with 213 cases being recorded by the end of that month. The figure from September showed 540 dengue cases, while 393 cases have been recorded in the first 20 days of October.
Dr. Avinash Kumar Singh, Patna-based civil surgeon, is reported to have said that the dengue outbreak will remain at peak until November, although the cases are less when compared previous year (still on the rise).
A person may show symptoms of dengue after 4 to 10 days of exposure to the virus, which include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and rash.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that people who get infected for the second time may show severe symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, abnormal breathing, bleeding gums or nose, fatigue, restlessness, blood in vomit or stool, feeling thirsty, pale, cold, and feeling weak.
The best way to prevent dengue infection is to protect yourself from infected mosquito bites. The global health organization also recommend preventing mosquito breeding around your house, while using window screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your indoor space.
Ensure to keep mosquito repellents handy, particularly those that contain DEET, Picaridin or IR3535 and also coils, including vaporizers for preventing mosquito bites.
