Paofit takes virtual fitness apps to a new level, allowing users to run with friends in real time.
Digital indoor fitness developer Paofit has announced a new mobile fitness app designed to make indoor running much more fun. The app features real time, interactive images of runners and their friends running through stunning HD video locations, such as villages in Bali, the Tuscan countryside or California's Joshua Tree National Park. Runners can use the app on their treadmill from any location in the world. (Read: What is an ideal diet for runners?)
Paofit uses 'mixed reality' technology to track and display each runner's avatar in real time. The HD videos sync with the runner's speed and accurately display the position of other nearby runners. When a runner increases speed, so does the avatar. Paofit tracks runner speeds via mobile devices' built-in accelerometers, or directly through a PaofitTrack treadmill sensor if available. Another option is a Life Fitness treadmill featuring a Discover or Track+ Console. Life Fitness is the first equipment manufacturer to feature Paofit. Runners can watch avatars either through their mobile device's screen on the treadmill console or on a larger screen if the device features HDMI cable or Apple TV connections. Additional features include a wide range of running video locations, the ability to save and share runs with others, and custom running events. The latter involves users setting up digital running events and inviting others to join. Upcoming features include versions for iPhone and Android, biking and other indoor cardio activities, and being able to chat with other runners. (Read: The 5 latest fitness equipments in town)
Other examples of fitness virtual tour apps include Fit Trip, which syncs up to heart rate monitors and features 30-minute virtual trips of assorted regions around the world. Another option is Virtual Runner, an app that takes runners on virtual tours of the world's most famous jogging paths using high-def videos.
Paofit is available now for the iPad. The app is free, while location video purchases begin at $1.99.
