Pakistan Polio Outbreak: Sindh Reports Second Case Of 2025

Pakistan has logged yet another positive case of polio virus making it the second case of 2025 after the first case that was reported from Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Pakistan has logged yet another positive case of polio virus making it the second case of 2025. According to the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication, the second case is from Badin district in Sindh. The first case of the year was reported in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Last year, Pakistan had reported a total of 74 polio cases with one case each from Punjab and Islamabad, 27 from Balochistan, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 23 from Sindh. The country is currently witnessing a polio resurgence which has alarmed health officials.

Polio protection can only be carried out through routine vaccinations. Multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completing the routine vaccination schedule for children under five are crucial to providing high immunity against polio.

Authorities have announced that the first nationwide polio vaccination campaign of 2025 has been successfully completed, reaching 99% of its goal. The campaign, which took place from February 3 to 9, provided the polio vaccine to over 45 million children.

According to previous reports of polio outbreak in Pakistan, officials indicated the existence of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) has been verified by environmental samples taken from 21 districts in Pakistan.

A spokesperson from the NIH Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication stated that the samples were collected from various locations, including Dera Bugti, Hub, Khuzdar, Noshki, Nasirabad, Usta Muhammad, Zhob, Lasbela, Islamabad, Charsadda, Peshawar, Swabi, Tank, Bahawalpur, DG Khan, Jhang, Lahore, Multan, Rahimyar Khan, and Karachi East.
