Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in India with nearly 3 million people suffering from the disease. According to the numbers by WHO, 500,000 people in India die from cancer and the number is expected to rise to 700,000 by 2015.

With a disease of such incidence rates very less, data is analysed to outcomes of cancer treatment and how patients react to drugs. The Hindu reported that, to collect and analyse this data, a new software program called OncoCollect ' has been developed by Ramesh Nimmagadda, director of medical oncology at Apollo Hospitals. Dr . Nimmagadda explained that we in India still depend on western guidelines and protocols for treating diseases like cancer. However, the Indian patients react differently to drug regimens followed in the west. Patients exhibit more side effects and a low tolerance for toxicity. Hence, he emphasized the need to collect and analyse the data on cancer treatments and their outcomes to arrive at an Indian standard of treatment.

While elaborating on the software he revealed that this easy to use software can be installed on a desktop or to a hospital s LAN, which will allow the doctors to fill in the details of the patients, choose the drugs and the regimen they are using for the treatment from within the software and also enter the patient's response to the treatment like side effects, toxicity survival periods and relapses. The software is equipped for all cancers and lymphomas except blood cancers.

The software enables each doctor to analyse his data for patterns and could also contribute to the pool of data generated within the hospital and also across the country. The data gathered can then be studied for larger trends. Dr. Nimmagadda further explained that for the effective use of the software they have set up the Ramesh Nimmagadda Cancer Foundation which will provide assistance while using it and the software will be available free of cost.

The software will create a pool of all the data from patients across the country which will help to arrive at a more efficient and error free treatment standards. The software will also showcase the economic costs borne by the patient and will help assessing the cost efficacy of treatments.
