Five time World boxing champion and Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom underwent a surgery to have her gall bladder removed at the private Shija Hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) in Imphal. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors headed by Sorokhaibam Jugindra, the institute's medical superintendent.
'She is fine and healthy. As recommended by the doctors, she is getting discharged tomorrow,' said Surjit Singh Khaidem, the hospital's public relations officer.
Why is the gall bladder important?
The gall bladder is a tiny sac present below the liver. Its main function is to collect and disseminate bile that is produced by the liver.
The bile is sent to the small intestine through small ducts called the cystic duct and the common bile duct. The function of the bile is to help in the digestion of food and aid the small intestine absorb fat-soluble vitamins and break down fat. It also helps in the elimination of waste through faeces.
The mother of twin boys, Mary Kom, started her boxing career at the tender age of 16. She was only 18 years old when she made her international debut at the first AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in the United States, winning a silver medal. (Read more: What are gall stones?)
