From now on, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) won t be a procedure only for couples who are from higher socio-economic backgrounds. Instead, even those from lower income groups can finally opt for this procedure in Mumbai s Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital in Parel. The charitable trust hospital inaugurated its IVF centre on January 15 (Friday) where Dr Deepak Sawant, Health Minsiter was also present.

The Wadia Assisted Reproduction Technology Centre will also offer super-specialty Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). It is estimated that nearly 20 % of married couples in India suffer from infertility and need medical assistance for a successful childbearing. The magnitude of the problem is therefore quite large. Infertility is prevalent in all classes of society and affects both the rich as well as the economically challenged with equal frequency. This initiative will ensure that married couples from lower socio-economic backgrounds can also avail IVF treatment, says Dr Sawant.

The average cost of IVF treatment in India is anywhere between Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 4,50,000 for only one cycle depending on which hospital or private centre the couple is undergoing the procedure. Currently, there are almost 600 IVF centres across India. CEO of Wadia Hospitals , Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, says, Seeing the rising numbers every year we felt a pressing need to start a highly economical project in the field of Assisted Reproduction that will serve the need for such a treatment at a much subsidized rates making it affordable to common people. Our aim is to make these costly treatments available or accessible to the bottom of our society pyramid.
