Now an injection to cure heart disease

Soon, angioplasty and bypass surgery could be a thing of the past. Scientist have discovered a new method to cure heart disease. The revolutionary new treatment involves introducing a stem cell jab into the heart muscle, to help it recuperate.

In a quick and easy procedure doctors simply take some bone marrow from the patient s body and insert the stem cells into the person s heart. This mixture helps strengthen the heart muscle helping it repair itself. This new groundbreaking treatment from the Clinic's Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, has got stellar results. Each patient who was treated with stem cells regained good heart pumping function within six months. The patients also enjoyed improved fitness and could walk longer distances, researchers said.

Dr Andre Terzic, lead researcher of the study, said that regenerative medicine has moved beyond the realms of science fiction; it is an actual study that has been proved by clinical evidence for a new approach in cardiovascular medicine. During the trial, 45 heart failure patients were treated with a special type of stem cell harvested from the top of the patient's hip. The researchers used a particular type of protein to instruct the stem cells to behave like heart muscle cells, and then injected it into the patient s heart.

When compared to patients who were on conventional heart medication, patients who received this revolutionary treatment showed a whopping 7% increase in the amount of blood pumped out of the heart. The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
