What if an app can help you differentiate healthy food from junk food as you go grocery shopping? An environmental organization in America has developed a new database that breaks down which foods are good and not so good. The Environmental Working Group's database scores more than 80,000 grocery items, based on nutrition, safety of ingredients, food additives and the amount of processing, Fox News reported.

The organization said that their idea is to get shoppers to make 'healthier, greener and cleaner food choices' helped also by a free app -to be released soon-that offers information with the scan of a smartphone. The products are rated on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the best) and how well they perform in three categories: nutrition, processing, and 'ingredients of concern.' Nutrition makes up about 70 per cent of the score, ingredients about 20 per cent, and the amount of processing is 10 per cent. (Read: Why eating junk food can make you lazy)

Ken Cook, EWG's president and cofounder, said that things that get bad scores are breakfast cereal, frozen pizza and even some meats. More positive scores were given to foods higher in protein, fibre, omega-3s, and minimal processing-foods 'closer to what you might find in your kitchen than what you might find in a chemical plant.' Harmful components in junk foods

Bleached/enriched flour: Bleach flour is a powdered form of crushed cereal crops and seeds. It has bleaching agents added to it so that it looks white instead of yellow. It is usually added to wraps, rolls and burgers. Enriched flour is so refined that it can cause diabetes.

Coloring/food dyes: These are mainly used in processed foods and soft drinks. Many popular candies, pickles and chips contain these colouring agents. These colouring agents can lead to allergic reactions in a person s body.

Partially hydrogenated oils: Processed foods and restaurant fried foods contain trans fats .These oils do not complete the process of hydrogenation. They are very high in trans fat which increase bad cholesterol. Consumption of too much trans fat over time can lead to heart disease. Read more about Calorie count of common junk food items
