Soon open defecation, in rural areas will be a thing of the past. If we go by what the Nirmal Bharat Yatra campaign aims to achieve, in a few years every rural family will have access to plumbing and sanitation. This yatra is a mega campaign to spread the message of rural sanitation, will start on October 3rd, focusing on making the country free of open defecation.
The announcement was made by actress Vidya Balan, who is also the brand ambassador of the rural development ministry s sanitation project, as well as Union minister Jairam Ramesh.
The union minister said that the 2000 kilometre yatra is aimed at all sections of society including school children to pass on the message. He assured that the multi-media campaign will start from October 2. The yatra is set to start from Gandhi Ashram in Sevagram, Wardha (Maharashtra) and end at Bettiah(Bihar).
The yatra will continue for over a month and end on November 17th. It will cover areas such as Indore, Kota, Gwalior, Gorakhpur and Bettiah, which is over 200 km in 56 days. The programme will approximately cost Rs 12 crore.
The union minister emphasis the role that the bollywood fraternity has with this drive. He says that since it is one medium that reaches every individual far and wide, it will make this initiative that much more of a success.
