A new study has found that even a small intake of processed foods can also significantly increase your risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, certain cancers, and type 2 diabetes.
In its new finding, researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington explain that even low levels of regular consumption of processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), and trans fatty acids (TFAs) can harm your body.
The evaluation was done using a method called 'Burden of Proof Meta-Regression' which further reported that consuming processed meat (at 0.6 57 g d 1) was associated with at least an 11% average increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 7% (at 0.78 55 g d 1) increase in colorectal cancer risk.
SSB intake (at 1.5 390 g d 1) was associated with at least an 8% average increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 2% (at 0 365 g d 1) increase in IHD risk. TFA consumption (at 0.25 2.56% of daily energy intake) was associated with at least a 3% average increase in IHD risk.
Dr. Demewoz Haile, lead author and research scientist at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, expresses, "These findings support earlier research, reinforcing that minimizing intake of processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fats is crucial to improving health outcomes."
"There is no safe level of habitual consumption of these food groups, so they should not be included in our daily diet," he stated.
Previous studies have established that diets high in processed foods were estimated to 300,000 deaths in the year 2021. Meanwhile, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fatty acids contributed to millions of disabilities adjusted life years.
Researchers recognise that diet is a personal choice, however they recommend to limitting or eliminating processed foods, which is posing various health risks to your body.
"Our findings support what is widely recommended, including by the WHO and CDC: Avoid or reduce to the minimum possible level the consumption of processed meats, sugary drinksand artificial trans fats," Haile told leading media outlet.
