New study claims that apples are not as healthy as previously believed

Apple: Apples boost immune system and keep infections away because of a flavonoid called quercetin present in them. Apples also help counter stomach ailments like diarrhea (by absorbing excess water) and constipation (because of the high fibre content).

How many times have you heard that eating an apple might actually reduce your trips to the doctors clinic? Almost every other day, isn't it? Even though there are many health benefits of eating apples regularly, a new study claims that an apple might be an overrated fruit. (Read: Eat an apple everyday to keep obesity away)

How was the study conducted?

The study was conducted through a survey . Out of 8399 people who completed the dietary recall questionnaire, 753 were regular apple eaters and the rest were non apple eaters. The 9% people who ate apples regularly either had one small apple per day or 149 grams of raw apple.

What did the study find?

The study found that apple eaters had higher educational attainment. The survey also revealed that eating an apple daily was a choice exhibited by people who belonged a racial or ethnic minority and also were less likely to smoke. When they were asked about their frequency of visiting the doctor, it was revealed that they made not more than one self-reported visit in the past year. (Read:How many calories does an apple have?)

What does the study conclude?

The study suggested that the promoting apple consumption might not yield desired results in reducing the national health care expenditure and at the best apples can reduce your trips the pharmacist.The study is published online by JAMA Internal Medicine.

Despite theseclaims, the health benefits of apples cannot be overlooked. It is rich source of mineral and vitamins and eating it regularly helps to maintain a good overall health.

Pectin, a soluble fibre present in apples helps in absorbing cholesterol and thus reduces the chances of your arteries getting blocked. The fruit is also charged with antioxidants, which serves the same purpose of fighting bad cholesterol and thus, keep your heart healthy.

2. Lower your risk of stroke

According to a study conducted by Dutch researchers, people who consumed 171 grams of apple a day were 52% less likely to suffer from stroke compared to those who consumed 78 grams or lesser. So, gorge on an apple a day and lower your chances of suffering from stroke.

3. Apples fight cancer

Amidst the fact that unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle isincreasing your risk of suffering from cancer, eating apples can actually prevent you from cancer. Also, the presence of flavonoids, a chemical, in apples can help destroy cancer cells. However, make sure that you do not peel the apple, since most of the flavonoids are present in its skin.

4. Apples help beat diarrhoea and constipation

Even though diarrhoea and constipation are two very different stomach ailments, apples can help counter both. The fibre present in apples adds bulk to the food that you eat and thus, aids in better digestion thereby preventing constipation. It also absorbs absorb excess water in case of diarrhoea, providing you a quick relief.

5. Apples boost your immune system

Being rich in so many nutrients, apples can boost your immune system and keep you free from infections. In particular, a flavonoid called quercetin has been shown to significantly improve your immune system.
