Following a confirmed measles case in a person who travelled to Sydney from Queensland, the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) has issued an alert for central Sydney and the city's airport.
On Thursday, NSW Health confirmed that a person detected with measles visited several locations in Sydney between November 8 to 10, including a concert which was attended by around 70,000 people.
The state health authorities have advised people to monitor for measles symptoms until November 29 if they were present in certain places like the Sydney Airport, the city center, the concert, or trains in the inner-west between November 8 to 10.
Dr Jeremy McAnulty, Executive Director of Health Protection NSW, in a statement said, "It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until Friday 28 November."
He added, "It's important for people to stay vigilant if they've been exposed, and if they develop symptoms, to please call ahead to their GP or emergency department to ensure they do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients. We want to remind the community to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations."
In the statement issued on Thursday, Dr McAnulty also pointed out some signs to look out for during the recommended time frame. He said, "Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes, runny nose and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body."
According to Queensland Health, the case has also spent time in Central Brisbane and Brisbane Airport while they were unknowingly infectious.
The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) revealed that so far in 2025, there have been 153 confirmed measles cases in Australia and more than 115 cases reported altogether in the last five years. And out of 153 cases in 2025, 28 cases have been reported in NSW and 30 in Queensland.
