Fully vaccinated against deadly coronavirus? remember that you are still at risk. In a recent development, a new strain of the COVID-19 Delta variant has been found in Sweden, with some cases being among fully vaccinated individuals. According to the reports, a total of eight infections caused by the Delta variant with the E484Q mutation have been found in Uppsala, some 70 km north of capital Stockholm.
So far studies have claimed that it is a very known fact that virus mutates and they form new strain at a very high speed. The same has been noted in the case of the deadly coronavirus which has affected millions of lives worldwide. The mutations in coronavirus led to the formation of a highly infectious Delta variant the possible strain behind the ferocious second wave in India. The Delta then mutated to form another variant which was named Delta Plus, which may cause another coronavirus wave in India. However, the newly detected variant of Delta COVID-19 in Sweden is also said to be highly transmissible and infectious.
Speaking to the media, the experts said, "Although little is known about the new strain, studies indicate that it may be more transmissible." The experts also added that all the new cases are reported to be linked to travel abroad. "We take all variants against which vaccines may not have the same protection seriously," Mats Martinell, medical manager at the sampling unit of Uppsala Region, told the media. "We are in a stage where there can be large outbreaks connected to super-spreading events such as parties, and one has to be careful," he further added.
More than 1.11 million COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Sweden, according to the latest official statistics. Till date, 80.5 per cent of the adult population have received at least one vaccine dose, while 61.1 per cent have had both doses.
