The health of Mandela, 94, has been a focus of concern. The former South African president underwent a successful surgery to remove gall stones, the procedure was done endoscopically. He was hospitalized on Dec. 8, 2012 for a series of tests. The results revealed that there was a recurrence of the lung infection and that Mandela had developed gallstones.
His hospital stay this time was longer than 2001, when he underwent seven weeks of radiotherapy after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. In January 2011, Mandela was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital for an acute respiratory infection for a short period. In February this year, he spent a night in a hospital for a minor diagnostic surgery to determine the cause of an abdominal complain.
Despite heavy rain, a large contingent of journalists camped outside the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria, where Mandela was believed to be treated. The government did not disclose the whereabouts of the former president to ensure privacy for him and his family. Mandela, who turned 94 July 18 this year, was imprisoned for 27 years during the apartheid period. He was elected the country's first black president in 1994.
