Leading multi-specialty healthcare chain Narayana Hrudayalaya on Tuesday announced it will offer day care breast surgery, keeping in view the emotional, physical and financial stress a patient undergoes.

The day care, one-night, out-patient and ambulatory breast surgery centre manages a patient's expectations through a pre-operative assessment and communication to her family about the surgical techniques, admission and discharge criteria and post-operative care at home, Narayana hospital's oncoplastic breast surgeon Archana Shetty said in a statement on Tuesday. The day care surgery uses the latest surgical techniques to ensure the patient heals faster and is discharged the same day.Internationally, it has become an accepted method of treatment, but in India the concept is new. All-day care surgical patients come early in the day and leave same day after the surgery. The procedure and aftercare is explained to the patient before leaving the hospital.

With the increasing requirement for breast surgeries, the novel service will benefit many patients. It is envisaged that with the advancing clinical practices, the day care will become the norm, Shetty said.

Breast cancer is set to overtake cervical cancer by 2020 as the most common cancer in women. In the last four years in Britain, it has been proved that even the major breast surgery can be performed safely as a day care or one night stay. Among the advantages of day care surgery is no psychological and emotional impact of in-patient, reduction in exposure to hospital acquired infection and incidence of deep vein thromboses from lying in bed all day. According to hospital founder Devi Shetty, breast cancer in India has increased by 15 percent over the last decade, with young patients accounting for 10 percent of them. About 30 new breast cancer cases are detected every month. It is 90 percent curable in stage one and 80 percent in stage two. There are about 100,000-125,000 new breast cancer cases are reported across the country every year, the statement quoted him as saying.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from the breast tissues. Both men and women can be afflicted by it though it s rarer in men. Along with cervical cancer it s one of the most common types of cancer that afflicts women. One of the major issues with breast cancer is that it is often not detected soon enough. This is due to low awareness about the disease. Detecting it early can significantly reduce the death risk.
