In a new step in cancer research, scientist have now been able to demystify the mechanism of spreading of lung cancer.
How does lung cancer spread?
The researchers at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute have discovered the protein which controls the binding of cells to each other. The study revealed that a protein called TIAM1 was chopped up when the process of cell maintenance goes wrong. Healthy cells are regularly known to scrap off old cell parts during their maintenance but, lung cancer cells scrap off excessive TIAM1 ties. How is this research unique?
This research for the first time has revealed the process of how lung cancer cells severed ties with their neighbors and move to different parts of the body to spread cancer,by overtaking the cells recycling process and pushing it into overdrive, explained the lead researcher, Dr Angeliki Malliri, at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute at the University of Manchester. What does this research promise?
The main aim of the study is to target the process of spreading of lung cancer and develop a method that could stop this spread. If this recycling process is targeted it could keep the cells stuck firmly together and the spread of lung cancer could be curbed.
