Mumps Outbreak In Kerala: Officials Issue Warning Of New Variant As Cases Increase
Kerala has recently reported more than 50 cases of mumps every day in the district Thiruvananthapuram. Mumps is a highly contagious diseases that is spreading among school children in the state. Two doctors working at Thiruvananthapuram general hospital have also reportedly contracted the virus while treating patients. The doctors are now on a ten day leave for recovery.
As per reports from a Medical Officer, Mallapuram has also recorded some cases pertaining to mumps disease. More than 13,643 mumps cases were reported in Malappuram in 2024 alone, say reports.
The district medical authorities have urged people to increase vigil against the mumps outbreak. According to news reports, the warning by District Medical Officer R. Renuka came on Wednesday as there was a spurt in the cases of mumps from across the district.
Mumps is a viral diseases which spreads through the air and affects salivary glands near the ears, leading to symptoms such as fever, swollen and painful salivary glands, sore throat, headache, loss of appetite and fatigue.
There seems to be a speculation regarding the sudden rise in mumps cases with experts predicting that it may be a new variant. The possibility of the rise of a new variant could be the culmination of climate change, said the experts. They also say that the new strain may be more severe and considering the circumstances, could impact both children and adults. Children of under age 10 are typically susceptible to mumps virus but in this case, adults have also gotten infected. It has been adviced to all citizens to not delay treatment in case they spot any symptoms.
