Mumbai city might be hit by another wave of strikes. Around 3,000 doctors from the city's public hospitals are planning to go on mass 'casual leave'. Their decision to go on an indefinite strike came after the medical education minister Dr Vijaykumar Gavit, turned down their appeal to hike their basic pay and stipends by 136%.
The agitating doctors are part of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), and said they were demanding a hike from the initial sum of Rs 6,600 to a sum of Rs 15,600. They say that this amount is normally what junior doctors are paid at all private medical colleges. They also added that demanding better living conditions when posted at rural hospitals and immediate placement after passing their PG were basic needs that any doctor should have.
According to Dr Santosh Wakchaure, president of central MARD, said that they were trying to find a permanent solution, and avoid going on strike again. He also said that they would call off the strike only if all their demands were met. On the other hand, Dr Pravin Shingare, head of Directorate of Medical Education and Research said that they had offered the doctors a 5,000 rupee hike and accepted all their other demands. He also mentioned that if the doctors did not call off the strike within the next 24 hours the directorate would be compelled to take action against them.
