MS Dhoni, the man who led India to the No. 1 Test position has decided to hang up his boots in the longest format of the game. Dhoni announced his decision after the third Test match against Australia ended in a thrilling draw.
Dhoni s record as a Test captain in overseas conditions hasn t been impressive, and India had suffered heavy defeats under his reign. However, his contribution to the game is unquestionable and there are several things about wellbeing that we can learn from him. Here are a few of them.
Dhoni keeps calm when the going gets tough
Referred to as Captain Cool , MS Dhoni has time and again proven how he never lets the nerves get the better of him. Be it while he is batting in a last over cliff-hanger, or seeing the opposition batsman go hammer and tonks at his bowlers, Dhoni doesn t let his heart rate go up and thinks clearly.
I'm a person who lives very in the moment. , said MS Dhoni in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo. This explains why he hasn t let so much success get to his head. Playing for India, after coming from a small town like Ranchi is itself a big achievement, leave alone the fact that he is among India s most successful captain ever. Despite all this, he doesn t bask too much in the glory of this, and just goes on doing is job which is to try and win matches for India.
Dhoni is not someone who is afraid of experimenting with his hairstyle
MS Dhoni came to international cricket with long, wavy hair and an aggressive attitude with his bat. His batting remained similar, but his hairstyles changed. After the World Cup, he had gone bald. He has also sported the Mohawk hairstyle and recently rocked 'The Jarhead' hairstyle.
Dhoni hardly loses his cool and is an epitome of fitness
Hardly will you see MS Dhoni get angry at his players for not performing. He understands that everyone is trying their best, and also believes in giving plenty of chances to an upcoming cricketer to make his mark. His fitness levels are extremely enviable too. Dhoni is a multi-tasker
Being a wicketkeeper-batsman means that you have to play a huge role in the team. On top of that, Dhoni has the mentally draining responsibility of being a captain. Despite all this, he doesn t let his game suffer and fulfills all his responsibilities well.
Dhoni goes with his gut-feeling
MS Dhoni has time and again taken decisions that have baffled viewers and commentators alike. I don't plan a lot and believe in my gut feel. But what many people don't understand is that to have that gut feel, you have to have experienced that thing before. For instance, you don't know anything about bikes. I open one of my bike engines and keep it in front of you and ask you 'which model does your gut feeling say this engine belongs to', you will be clueless. You won't have a gut feeling because you don't know anything about the object there. My gut feeling comes from my past experiences of all the cricket I've played in my life and the situations I have faced. , he told BCCI.tv in an interview. Like him, we too shouldn't be scared to listen to our gut and act accordingly.
Dhoni teaches you why destiny is no excuse for failure
Ranchi is not a city known for its facilities, but still MS Dhoni managed to overcome the obstacles and shot to the very top of international cricket. In an ad for Star Sports, Dhoni says this really inspiring thing, I believe that destiny is no excuse for failure. I believe success isn t limited by how small your hometown is. It s as big as the world you take on. I believe chances are like heartbeats, you cannot afford to miss a single one. I believe it s not the runs but how you run the game that wins it.
