Update: Santosh Lal passed away due to complications related to the disease on Wednesday.
It seems like India's Captain Marvel Mahendra Singh Dhoni isn't only a man with extraordinary sporting acumen and unfathomable depths of calmness but has a heart of gold as well. Recent media reports suggest that Dhoni, who's in the US right now, is extending all the help possible to his childhood friend Santosh Lal who has been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and was airlifted to Delhi for treatment. Dhoni and Lal go a long way back and MSD even credits Lal for inventing the famed helicopter shot which has made waves as an unorthodox batting shot in international cricketing circles.
'Former Ranji cricketer Santosh Lal was taken to Delhi by air ambulance and admitted to a hospital there. Besides Dhoni, all his friends have come forward in helping him fight his disease. Dhoni is in touch and helping in making all necessary arrangements for the treatment,' said a close friend of Dhoni. Lal was admitted in an unconscious state in a Ranchi hospital before being shifted to the national capital.
Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary said they've donated around one lakh for his treatment and other association members and chipped with another Rs 39,500. 'Lal has played Ranji Trophy with Dhoni,' Chanchal Bhattacharya, Dhoni's coach during his formative years, said.
What is acute pancreatitis ?
Acute pancreatitis is a disease affecting the pancreas. It could be caused by gallstones lodging in the biliary tract, chronic alcohol abuse, abdominal trauma or chronic intake of certain drugs like sulphonamides, tetracycline, oestrogen. In a few rare cases, it could also be due to infections, increased calcium levels in the blood or even hereditary. It is usually identified by pain in the abdomen (upper abdomen), sudden in onset but gradually becoming intense and constant. It can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
Treatment usually starts with trying to control the pain with analgesics. Once the cause is determined, it is ideal to tackle it.
Patients are not given anything to eat orally and are administered IV fluids. The condition requires immediate care as a number of complications ranging from GI bleeding, circulatory shock, kidney failure, pulmonary failure can develop.
