Estimates point out that of the 60 to 80 million couples suffering from infertility globally, about 15 to 20 million are from India alone. However, with ongoing technological advancements in the field of medicine, it is not surprising that women even in their late thirties and forties are being able to conceive and deliver healthy children despite all existing challenges. Women should not lose hope said Dr Hrishikesh D Pai, Medical Director, Bloom IVF Group & Secretary General of the Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecological Societies of India on the occasion of Mother s Day. Significant lifestyle modifications coupled with the right medical assistance can improve chances of a successful conception. Also Read - Foods new moms should avoid after delivery

Even today, a majority of people think of infertility as associated with women. However, it can affect both men and women. Experts say that about half of all cases of infertility are due to problems affecting men although opening up about this still poses a major social stigma. One of the most common reasons for infertility apart from postponing pregnancy is low count and motility of sperms. Some other reasons include ejaculation of semen, cancer of the genital system or exposure to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, diabetes, mumps in adolescence or immunological infertility. According to Dr. Hrishikesh D Pai, Making certain changes to lifestyle can help both men and women prevent and manage infertility better and they can look forward to planning a baby. A healthy mind with a healthy body is instrumental in increasing fertility. Lifestyle modifications like not consuming tobacco and alcohol in excess, managing your weight, exercising regularly should be made by any couple who are facing infertility issues. When needed, we recommend various fertility treatment procedures like Artificial Insemination, In Vitro fertilisation, Gamete intrafallopian transfer, Embryoscope, Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), donor eggs and donor embryos depending on the case history of the individual. We recommend these artificial technologies only when we feel they are extremely necessary. Helping patients conceive naturally always remains our primary motto. This Mother s Day, I would like to beckon all those women suffering from infertility not to lose hope. There have been sea changes in the horizon of fertility treatment. Seeking medical advice at the right time can go a long way in bringing happiness to the lives of infertile couples. (Read: Infertility profiling: 8 tests to check why you re not getting pregnant)

There is an alarming increase in the number of cancer cases every year. This is more so in the case of the younger population. It is a well-known fact that cancer treatment procedures like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery destroy the eggs and make women sterile. Oocyte (egg) freezing or cryopreservation is a proven form of fertility preservation in women and successful to a great extent. Oocyte freezing is also gaining popularity and acceptance among working couples because with more and more women joining the ambitious work force, marriage and motherhood have been pushed down on the priority list.

Getting pregnant can be an uphill battle for those with infertility issues. Science and technology, however, have made it possible for couples to fight these battles and win too. With so many treatment options, making the right choice can be daunting. Making a gynaecologist or a fertility specialist an integral part of your journey to parenthood and learning to not lose hope are the two key factors that can help you in the long run.
