Heavy downpour during the monsoon also brings with it seasonal diseases. In view of the recent heavy rains in the state, the health department has ordered the officials to swing into action and take immediate steps to prevent the spread of the vector-borne and water-borne diseases.
At a recent meeting at the Health Directorate, health minister AA Khan said, 'Due to heavy rains in the state in recent weeks, precautions should be taken and teams of doctors should be sent to the affected regions. The needy should get the proper treatment and medication.'
In the last week in state, around 980 cases of malaria have been witnessed. Dholpur tops the chart with 100 cases followed by Alwar and Bharatpur with 70 each. In Jaipur, the figure stands at 20 cases. During the corresponding period last year, around 1,250 cases were reported in state.
Talking to dna, Dr BR Meena, health director, Jaipur, said, 'In the last week, the state has received heavy rains. Therefore, cases of seasonal diseases are on the rise. The health department has already swung into action and is taking precautionary measures.'
Awareness camps, anti-larval activities and medicinal stocks have been provided and all the necessary steps are taken to check it, he added.
SMS Hospital has received 10 cases of malaria, one each case of dengue and jaundice, four cases of diarrhoea, 58 cases of viral and seven cases of pneumonia in the last week.
What is malaria?
Malaria is an infectious disease that is caused by mosquito-borne plasmodium parasite which infects the red blood cells. It's one of the deadliest diseases in India. There's no vaccine for malaria yet and immunity occurs naturally through repeated infection. Common symptoms are fever, chills, vomiting, nausea, body ache, headache, cough and diarrhoea. If untreated, it can lead to complications like jaundice, dehydration, anaemia, brain malaria, liver failure and kidney failure.
