Monkeypox Enters India: Country Reports 1st Suspected Case of Mpox, Patient Put Under Isolation
India's First Mpox Case Reported: The Union Health Ministry on Sunday confirmed that a young male, with a recent travel history of a country witnessing a Mpox cases surge, has been identified as a suspect case of the disease. As per reports, the man has been put under isolation in a designated hospital and is currently stable. "Samples from the patient are being tested to confirm the presence of Mpox," the Ministry told the media.
"The development of this case is consistent with the earlier risk assessment conducted by the NCDC and there is no cause of any undue concern," the health ministry said. After the World Health Organisation (WHO) alert last month, experts assessed the risk of the infection in India and said there was a possibility of a few imported cases but the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission was low for India.
Talking about the threat of another pandemic in the country, the government has assured that the situation of Mpox in India is under control and that the development is consistent with previous risk assessments that were conducted by the National Centre for Disease Control (CDC).
"There is no cause of any undue concern," the ministry said. The news about the country's first suspected case comes three weeks after the World Health Organisation (WHO)declared the outbreaks in 12 African countries a global emergency.
Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, is a viral illness related to smallpox and has been spreading rapidly across the globe. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a global health emergency, raising concerns about its potential to become a pandemic.
According to the studies, the monkeypox virus primarily spreads through close contact with an infected person or animal. This can include direct contact with a rash, respiratory droplets, or bodily fluids. It can also be transmitted through contaminated materials, such as bedding or clothing.
On Thursday, Congo received its first batch of 100,000 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine that can treat Mpox infection.
