Mollywood actor Devan, who is popularly known for his villain role in cinema, has recently opened up about a tragic event he experienced a couple of years ago. While talking to a leading media outlet, Baasha (1995) star Devan walks us through the sudden demise of his wife Suma in 2019.
He says that the painful truth behind Suma Devan's sudden passing is due to an allergy that was triggered by an ice cream. The sweet treat, which was supposed to bring joy, severely affected the lungs of Suma Devan, causing her death.
"It has been only four years since my wife passed away. She had suddenly developed an allergy to ice cream," Devan stated.
According to the veteran actor, the tragedy began years earlier in Chennai, "While we were in Chennai, she once experienced severe breathlessness immediately after eating ice cream. At that time, we rushed her to the hospital and managed to save her.
However, as time passed by, Suma, perhaps forgetting the earlier warning, had some herself when their daughter was visiting home. Devan added, "After the first incident, doctors had strictly warned her never to eat ice cream again, regardless of the brand." Then one day, when the veteran actor was away for shooting in Cherthala, the tragedy struck.
"Within an hour, she began to struggle to breathe," says the actor, whose house help called him and said that Suma was gasping for air. In her own words, "Chechi is rolling on the floor, unable to breathe."
Devan further added that, by the time he reached home, the health condition of his Suma had worsened. Although she was rushed to the hospital, doctors were unable to save her. "The ice cream allergy had created holes in her lungs; all the air she inhaled was leaking out. It was a fatal condition," he said.
It has been four years since Suma Devan left this earth in 2019, at the age of 55, leaving behind his husband Devan, daughter Lakshmi, and son-in-law Sunil Sugathan, who lives in the United States.
