Following two deaths due to Japanese encephalitis in the neighbouring state of Manipur, Mizoram government has started taking rapid preventing measures to curb a potential outbreak of the disease. As part of the efforts, Aizawl Civil Hospital has been designated as the sentinel site hospital, necessary equipment and trained health officials have also been posted at the hospital. Even though there has been no case of Japanese encephalitis in the state, the health department has started spraying anti-larval medicine in an around residential houses and animal rearing areas. Japanese encephalitis is a type of encephalitis caused by a flavivirus and is transmitted via the bite of Culex mosquitoes. The virus can also be transmitted from one person to the other through direct contact with the patient and inhaling respiratory droplets of the patient. The symptoms of the disease include a headache, confusion, disorientation and stiffness in the back. Altered consciousness, Seizures, Weakness and fever are also other symptoms of the disease. Treatment of Japanese encephalitis is usually symptomatic which means symptoms such as a headache and fever are treated. Most of the patients require care in an ICU setting. Preventing encephalitis is the best way to control an outbreak. Vaccinations against tick-borne Japanese encephalitis are available in India.
