Condemning the alleged casual approach of the Medical Council of India (MCI) in regulating medical education, a group of doctors said on Wednesday the country is facing a deep quality crisis. A team of doctors from the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) said most of the new doctors were products of a system which was compromising merit in entrance exam and education. 'The private colleges, who hold their own exam, take students not on merit but on the basis of capitation fee,' said K.K. Kohli, state secretary of DMA.
The capitation fee ranged from Rs.60 lakh to Rs.2.5 crore, he said. Out of 362 medical colleges in the country 168 are in the government sector. The doctors association complained that the regulator was headless. 'We condemn the causal approach of the MCI and request the health and law ministries to intervene in the matter in order to restore merit in medical education,' said Anil Goyal, president-elect DMA.
